Product Categories, Products and Variants in Ritapos
To set up your menu in Ritapos, you need to know how categories, products and variants work. Here is what each one does and how to use it.
Planning what goes on your menu, how each product is served and what it costs, then updating that plan whenever something changes, can be a chore. Ritapos works hard to make this as easy as possible for you. In this article we explain the concepts you need to get the most out of Ritapos and how to use them.
The basic concepts are product categories, products, product variants and add-on groups. Let's go through them one by one, then look at a worked example at the end.
Product categories are the main groups that hold your products. A venue might have many categories, such as Coffees, Cold Drinks and Desserts. When you open a new order and start adding items, categories also make it easier to find the product your guest asked for.
Your product categories can be visible or hidden.
It makes sense to group variants such as Small, Medium and Large in a hidden category. That keeps your order entry screen simple.
Products are the individual items on your menu, such as Minced Meat Pide, Cheese Pide, Turkish coffee or Lemon Cheesecake. When you add a product to the system, you should enter details such as its name, description and sale price.
A product will often come in different variants, and these are hard to set up in any system. To share what we have learned, we suggest looking at the example below.
You should not set up Pide (Turkish flatbread), which is really a product category, as a main product and then define main products such as Minced Meat Pide and Cheese Pide as its variants. That choice will make life harder for you and your waiters.
Instead, choose Minced Meat Pide, inside the Pide product category, as the main product and define its variants, such as one portion, one and a half portions or double. That will make your venue much easier to manage.
The key point here is that Pide is the product category and Minced Meat Pide is the main product.
There is one more thing to keep in mind when you define variants: a product that has variants cannot be added to an order by itself. Only one of its variants can be added. So you will need to define an exact copy of the main product as one of its own variants.
Add-on groups let you attach ready-made notes to your products, or add other products to turn an item into a menu.
You can save add-on groups in advance and assign them to products, or give each product its own add-on group. Because separate add-on groups for every product make updates harder, Ritapos recommends defining add-on groups in advance.
Now let's watch a video of a product you could set up in Ritapos using everything above. In this venue's setup, the Adana Kebab Wrap Menu (a spicy kebab wrap meal) starts at 21 TL, while the Double costs 33 TL. Ayran (a salted yogurt drink) and one dessert are included free in the menu, and a different price can apply when the guest switches the drink.
The regular product price list looks like this:
When sold as a menu, the prices look like this:
In this video we will add an Adana Kebab Wrap Menu to a new order and choose Cola as the drink for an extra 2 TL.
